Course Outline

This programme is particularly designed for managers on all levels and team/project leaders who work with people and would like to improve both the team results and staff individual performance. This programme is also suitable for small/medium business owners who would like to accelerate positive changes in their companies - improving their business results, increasing market share etc.

Course Content

The programme is made up of the following:

 

Core compulsory papers (to be completed first)

 

CBC 101 - Introduction to management coaching (Level 5) 3 credits

On completion of this paper learners will be able to: discuss the main trends affecting the modern business world, understand some of the positive benefits that coaching can deliver, understand where coaching is commonly used in the business world, and discuss the characteristics of a successful coaching relationship.

 

CBC 102 - Coaching fundamentals (Level 5) 4 credits

On completion of this paper learners will be able to: discuss how coaching can support the management of change, define coaching and recognise its key characteristics and principles, and describe how coaching differs from other development disciplines such as mentoring, consultancy and therapy.

 

CBC 103 - Transactional and transformational coaching (Level 5) 3 credits

On completion of this paper learners will be able to: understand the preparation required to move out of one’s comfort zone and face change, understand the differences between transactional and transformational coaching and illustrate how they can be practically applied.

 

CBC 104 - Creating a coaching culture (Level 5) 4 credits

On completion of this paper students will be able to: discuss the attributes of a coaching culture, understand the different phases of a coaching programme and be able to design a programme and understand how to structure coaching sessions for maximum success.

 

CBC 105 - Core coaching competencies (Level 5) 8 credits

The content of this paper includes: identification of core coaching competencies, coaching knowledge and attitude, and specific coaching skills.

 

CBC 106 - Essential coaching tools (Level 5) 8 credits

This paper looks at a range of coaching tools including the coaching wheel, the Chinese menu principle and magical questions.

 

Elective papers (choose two of these papers)

 

CBC 111 - Coaching direct reports (Level 5) 5 credits

The content of this paper includes: coaching your own staff, delegating, feedback in direct report coaching, and mutual coaching in the workplace.

 

CBC 112 - Cooperation with external coaches (Level 5) 5 credits

The content of this paper includes: why and when to hire an external coach, targeting and selecting an external coach, working effectively with an external coach and evaluating cooperation.

 

CBC 113 - Specifics of team coaching (Level 5) 5 credits

The content of this paper includes: teamwork fundamentals, differences between coaching a group and coaching a team, team coaching, and evaluating team coaching.

 

CBC 114 - Leadership coaching (Level 5) 5 credits

Content in this paper includes: leadership fundamentals, leadership coaching specifics, coaching leaders on all levels, and coaching specific leadership skills.

 

CBC 115 - Business development coaching (Level 5) 5 credits

Content in this paper includes: coaching existing business improvements and coaching strategic business development.

 

CBC 116 - Diversity in coaching (Level 5) 5 credits

On successful completion of this paper, students will be able to: define and recognize benefits of diversity in business environment, use coaching as an effective approach for dealing with differences at workplace, and use diversity as a comparative advantage for business and personal growth.

Career Opportunities

Students who complete the programme will have the skills to improve team results and give guidance to individual staff members to enable them to improve performance. They will also be able to apply methods to enable positive changes in their business.

 

The programme may complement an existing business qualification. 

 

Graduates may continue study in the Diploma in Professional Coaching.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

  • As a guideline, one credit equates to approximately 10 hours study within an intake period.  Click HERE to download a Study Load Calculator (spreadsheet).
  • All papers selected within a particular intake must be completed within that intake unless a transfer is requested (conditions apply; see FAQs).
  • Application forms are filled out on a year by year basis and students are welcome to apply for multiple intakes on the one application form.  Further enrolment is the responsibility of individual students.  There is no automatic enrolment rollover.

Assessments

Assessments for this programme typically include case studies and short essays, combining theory with practical application.  There are also discussion board postings to be completed. There are no exams for this programme.

Additional Information

All SIT2LRN courses require you to have a computer and internet access. Students are required to use their SIT webmail only for all SIT2LRN communications. All course materials and information, including assessments and due dates, are located on the online Blackboard system. Once you have been accepted into a programme you will receive a Welcome Kit that includes information that you can use to familiarise yourself with our online Blackboard learning environment. From the intake start date you will have access to the online course materials to work through.

 

Facilitator Assistance:  During the enrolled intake period, students have email access to Facilitators, who endeavour to respond to emails within 48 hours (week days only).  All students are required, within the first two weeks of an intake, to send an email to their Facilitator confirming their start on the programme of study.  Students who have not emailed their facilitator or embarked upon their course of study by the end of the 2nd week of an intake, will be Faculty Withdrawn from the programme.  Such withdrawals may impact on future access to SIT Zero Fees Scheme and Student Direct Material Costs are still liable for payment.

Fees

The Zero Fees Scheme applies to this course, so there are no tuition fees as long as you are a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident (residing in NZ), BUT there is a student direct material cost of $6.50 per credit of study undertaken, plus a non-refundable administration fee of $50.00 for each application processed, and the required textbook/s listed below.  You must maintain satisfactory academic progress to retain your Zero Fees Scheme entitlement.

Application Criteria

  • All applicants should demonstrate a keen interest in business coaching and have academic attributes which indicate they have a reasonable likelihood of successful completion of the programme.
  • Some previous management experience is highly recommended (2 years minimum). 
  • Previous training (certificate or diploma) in business is an advantage.

Satisfactory Completion

For students to be considered to have satisfactorily completed this programme and be eligible for the awarding of the qualification Certificate in Business Coaching, they must have completed all scheduled course work requirements and assessments, successfully completed assessment requirements for all unit standards, and achieved a total of 40 credits as specified in the programme schedule.
