Course Outline

A career in joinery can offer job satisfaction with practical hands-on manufacturing. The Certificate in Joinery programme can provide a direct pathway into the joinery and furniture making industries.

 

SIT has a well-appointed training facility with some of the most modern equipment available. Students manufacture full-size, quality, practical projects throughout the duration of the programme and have the opportunity to use a wide range of traditional and advanced computer controlled machinery.

Career Opportunities

Successful completion of our Certificate in Joinery programme will help you establish your career in kitchen manufacture, furniture, joinery or timber machining. Graduates of this programme will have the knowledge and skills required for entering the joinery or furniture industries, and will be able to employ safe working practices appropriate to the industry.  Graduates will be competent in a wide range of skills and knowledge required for joinery and furniture making.

Application Criteria

Applicants should be a minimum of 16 years of age. NCEA achievements will be taken into consideration at selection. Desire to work in the joinery industry. Mature students are welcome, intending students over the age of 20 years should provide evidence of previous study or relevant work experience that is indicative of likely successful completion. Sponsored students with a letter of intent from an employer will have automatic entry.

Satisfactory Completion

Certificate in Joinery

For students to be considered to have satisfactorily completed this programme, and to be eligible for award of the qualification Certificate in Joinery they must have:

  • Completed required practical and theoretical course work and assignments.
  • Attended for not less than 80% of the timetabled class hours and other scheduled learning activities.
  • Shown competence in the following scheduled modules, to a minimum of 120 credits:

For students to be considered to have satisfactorily completed this programme, and to be eligible for award of the qualification National Certificate in Joinery (Introduction) they must have: Shown competence in the following scheduled modules, to a minimum of 65 credits, and upon application to NZQA:
